Web Servers Feature Chart
http://webcompare.iworld.com/compare/chart.html version of 4-dec-96For answers to questions such as why your favorite server isn't here
or how we collected this information, see our FAQ.
This chart is up to date as of December 4, 1996. It has five elements on
each server:
- The server's full name, along with a link to our complete description
of its features. This information has been collected from the vendors themselves,
although subject to our own interpretation. Servers are listed in name
- alphabetical order.
- The name of the server's vendor, along with a link to their
- own website
- The various operating systems supported. Win=Windows (NT, 95,
and/or 3.x), Unix= various Unix variations, OS/2=IBM OS/2, NetWare=Novell
NetWare, Mac=Macintosh. There are also servers that support Amiga, Be OS, DOS (yes, DOS!)
- MVS, VM and VMS operating systems.
- The range in price in US dollars that the North American or
US version of the server sells for. Some commercial servers are available
for free downloads but expire typically after 30 days' use (this is indicated
by $0). Some vendors have not provided pricing information (this
is indicated by $??). Software that is freely available without
any restrictions or timed versions is indicated by Free. Software that has been withdrawn from commercial distribution is indicated by DISC. These prices
do not reflect the additional cost of obtaining security certificates for
running encrypted server/browser communications. In some case, support
- and/or documentation are extra-cost options.
- The most recent version reported from the server manufacturer.
This version must be publicly available (such as a beta currently offered
- on a website), so any customer who wants to can get the product.
